Education in Myanmar followed the course of our torturous history. At independence, with our mission schools and prevalent English language, we were thought to be the first Asian tiger. But after the 1962 coup, schools were nationalized, Burmese replaced English as the official language of universities, and the system declined. Universities were closed after the 8888 Uprising, and regional colleges were promoted. Now times are changing again, as private schools and English instruction return.
I am a Yangon tour operator and young scholar.
