Psychologists are familiar with the effects of post-traumatic stress on individuals, but what does it mean for a whole population to suffer PTSD? Cambodia was very late to start the tribunal process with Khmer Rouge leadership, and Pol Pot died a free man. But does watching and listening to the tribunals help or harm? I'll talk with family and friends--can there be reconciliation? Will it help us to recover?
After studying at the Foreign Language Institute and Royal University of Phnom Penh, I became very interested in developing my country, improving governance and accountability, pushing for greater transparency and press freedom. This is not an easy task in Cambodia, but I'm proud to be part of the generation that is starting to move things forward.
Be brave, be honest, describe things as you see them. This is not just one way to move a country forward, it is the only way.
