When the United Nations dispatches peacekeepers to conflict zones in Africa, I am at work with the team of pilots and engineers to assure the safety of air missions. I serve UN flight operations from our bases in Kenya and Ghana, and our forces are deployed in Somalia, Congo, and Mali. Are you interested in flight? I’ll explain how we perform safety inspections, flight planning and communication--and how we manage the unexpected--with our fleet of CRJ, DC-8, Q400, Q100 and C172.
I am a ground operations expert for the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Africa, based in Nairobi. My work involves safety-checking, flight path planning, ground communication, and cooperation with pilots and engineers. I earned my certification in Flight Operations and Dispatch from the Kenyan Civilian Aviation Authority, and I am working toward my pilot’s license.
Being well-trained and making plans is just the beginning. Peacekeeping operations are full of surprises. Communication, teamwork and problem-solving are the daily challenges.
